The best way to generate traffic is to use a variety of methods. Starting with pay-per-click ads, writing articles, blogging, solo ads, press releases and newsgroups.

The problem with Google Adwords is that you can easily go over budget and a "click" doesn't always guarantee a sale.
I use free traffic building techniques and am having a lot of success. The only difference really between spending money to advertise and doing it for free is that it just takes a lot longer to get your site saturated into the Internet.
There are lots of way to get free traffic. Use Traffic Exchanges and posting in forums and writing articles. The Idea is to get a lot of links pointing back to your sites from other places on the Internet. This can take time but its worth it.

So do you use any other free advertising methods besides article traffic exchanges, article writing, and posting to forums?

i would be VERY careful if i were you, using google adwords. you can very easily blow a lot of money without even getting a sale. there is definitely an art to google ads. there are a few free traffic sites in my signature, which i have had some great success with..they bring traffic to my site daily..they are free too so you don't have to worry about blowing your budget!

Have a good day!
I went to the Library and checked out some books on internet marketing. I have used free classifieds, URL search engine submission, and PPC. I have some blog posts about these topics at <<REMOVED>>
Hope This Helps,
Brittany

Fresh and original content gets your site noticed by search engines. Popular keywords get you noticed even more (check out wordtracker.com if you haven't already). Obviously, you want to rank high on searches. You can also go to sites that are like yours and post comments with a link to your site.

Rent-a-list.com has worked for us. It is cheap and works great!

Google adwords is getting expensive now. You can use it only if you're selling stuff or providing high paying services. Otherwise you'd end up wasting money. Write articles, press releases, and get backlinks.

I agree! Google is getting real competitive and expensive! We pay about $1.40 per click. How expensive is that!!?? We sell high ticket items. That's the only reason it works for us. Regardless of how expensive it is, Google is still the best way for us to advertise personally.

How do you do with traffic exchange? Is that worth it to you?

I agree, adwords can be pretty expensive. One adwords trick is to run image ads. I run them on the content network for 1 cent a click. And I get targeted traffic! Not tons, but targeted.
If you can start a blog and write a post everyday, then post the link to digg, Yahoo, and whatever other blog posting sites you can find, you'll find traffic building up.

There are plenty of ways to generate traffic, and I still have found the most effective means as Word of mouth.
Other methods may attract more people, but how many will actually stick around?

Charlie, when you said you post articles, do you mean you post them to article directories such as Ezine Articles, or Go Articles . com and post the entry on your blog? I have been warned not to post the same content to an article directory and to my website and to my blog. I did not think it would be a problem because other websites will use my article as is. They are not even allowed to make changes. So, wouldn't that be duplicate content? If I submit an article to Ezine Articles and then do like others who click on ezine articles and post it to my website or blog, isn't that O.K.? or is there still a problem with doing something like that?
To avoid problems, I have been posting a title with the same or similar name and writing a couple of paragraphs and then pointing people to the article directory where the article is originally located.
Do you, or anyone else, know what is allowable?
Thanks
Randy
