I'm not new to making money online but I AM new to monetizing websites and "alternative" (but legitimate) means.
I've seen some links here about online surveys. In looking at them, I see they want money upfront. To me that is fishy. Can anyone elaborate on these?
Thanks!

Never pay for a survey Survey panels pay you. It's that simple. I have a made a blog about this type of thing. I was tired of all these ripoffs trying to make a fast buck.

Back in 2005, my husband was out of work. He found these ads online about making money by taking surveys. He joined a bunch of free surveys. It took four months, but we earned $10 and received free bottles of shampoo and conditioner. So recently I joined Instant Paid Surveys. What a scam! It was a list of free survey sites to join. Promised money. So far all I've gotten has been sweepstakes entries. My advice is paid survey sites are a rip-off.

I totally agree. Never pay some one in order that they will pay you. I have listed my favorite Paid Survey Companies on my website, www.festivalmonkey.co.uk

Paid surveys are usually a waste of time. You might earn $2 for a 15 minute survey...but that's pushing it.

99.9% of the people doing surveys make ZIP.
Out of the 1254694862216245622 million survey sites (many of them are scam sites) that are sweeping the web. There are only about 3 or 4 of them that are legit and will pay. However, if you're not in the right demographic, you make NOTHING.
Pinecone Research is one of the legitimate 4 that I've found on the internet. They pay about $5 per survey. However, signing up with them isn't as easy as simply clicking and joining their site. They usually recruit new members every few months or so and then they close sign-ups.
Also try checking on craigslist for those in person Focus Groups in your local city. They tend to pay decent as well.
Hope this helps!

Don't pay. This website lists EVERYTHING and what has and hasn't paid.

Surveys dont' generally pay more than a few dollars.
And I think the paid to read things take forever.
Try focus groups from the above site and google them for your area. They pay $75 to $200 a pop, but you don't get to do that many.

some programs really pay,
take a look at my sig,
People do get paid.
the best way to get paid is completing offers
with credit cards, I understand it might be scary,
but start with a cheap offer and make sure
you read the terms and conditions, so that
you don't get fool by the offer.
The site is mine, I really pay people,
it's up to you to make sure you do the right thing
to avoid your Credit card being rebilled.
if you want to give it a try I suggest, you
join and search for this offer :
Today's Escapes+ savings
it's free and easy, it's a 7day free trial,
so your job is to cancel the membership BEFORE 7 days at todays escapes.
if you do so, you get $25 gift card from them
+ $11 in your paypal by cashtodo.com by the end of july.
good luck with your online income.
ah, if you want to see how it works one member

Paid Surveys are G r e a t! -IF yo can catch one!!
Chasing down, waiting for, and investing you limited time doing "paid" surveys may prove to be very frustrating. Usually there only enter you in some type of phony sweepstakes, or waste your time asking you question after question only to end up saying "sorry, but you don't qualify for this survey". And if you do get paid it's probably just mere pennies. I find that paid focus groups are better than paid surveys if you want to get paid to share your opinion. And usually these pay a minimum of $60 for just one hour of your time.

I'll second (or third or fourth) the recommendations to not pay any company to take surveys.
The best paid surveys are the ones lumped together in a paid-to-do-offers program like Inbox Dollars and others.
You don't really make your money from surveys (you're generally limited to 1 a day, and make $1 or less from each), but from the trial offers.
I've done a post on my blog recently (link in my signature) detailing exactly how to make your first $30 at Inbox Dollars for a little under an hour's effort. A paid survey is only $1 of that $30, so that gives you an idea of where the money is.

Paid surveys is real, the key is to find the legitimate paid survey sites that actually pay!
I have done paid surveys for almost 3 years, and I make around $200 a month spending 1.5 hours a day taking surveys. I can make more if I want to since most of days I don't have time to do all the surveys I have been invited.
Some of you guys give good advice such as never pay someone to take surveys. You are absolutely right! I paid SurveyScout (SurveyScount is a site selling the database/directory of paid survey sites) when I got started but I canceled soon after because right after I signed up with the top 15 survey sites on their list, I got tons of spam emails and even telemarketing calls. Yes, surveyscout was promoting scam sites even I paid him!
I have listed all the legitimated paid survey companies that have paid me or at least sent me surveys over the years on my website (see my signature), I also wrote articles about paid survey guide for beginners and how to avoid paid survey scams etc.. hope to help survey newcomers a quick and good start.
Please be aware the difference between paid survey sites and paid offers sites. Paid survey sites are straight surveys, no credit card required whatsoever.
Doing paid surveys is not going to make you rich, but it is an easy and free way to make some extra cash online.

You should not have to pay to do surveys. The whole concept is that companies pay you to tell them about their product.
The same people who run survey sites also run the type at home programs. They are 99.99% not a legitimate way to earn money unless you can scam the next person into buying into that junk.

The vast majority of those kind of site are either so confusing you can't figure anything out, they only pay you pennies for what you do, they don't pay you at all.
Basically you waste your time and/or money with them.
About the only way you'd make money referring your website visitors to them is if the people that click your link don't know how bad they are.
Coming from experience, pick a different product or service to be affiliated with.

I have to agree survey sites do not really provide any real means of income so I don't think they should be classed as a legit home business opportunity.
