Well selected keywords are crucial for a successful PPC campaign. But how do you find good keywords, and how do you select the winners?
First, instead of coming up with words or phrases used in your industry, think of the words customers would use to find your product or service. When people start searching for a product or service, they use general words or phrases. Then, as they become more familiar with the product or service, they use keywords with the intent to compare products or services. Finally, they use very specific keywords that include name brands and/or even model numbers.
Here are a few ideas to find and select effective keywords:
- Think like your visitors and then try to expand your keywords. What questions they might be asking and what they’re trying to accomplish?
- Use a thesaurus to get broader terms around your main keywords.
- Using your favorite search engine, do a research on each keyword
- Visit the top sites on the results and see the industry-related keywords your competitors use.
- Add these keywords to your list and also use them to build content for your site.
The larger the list, the more chances you have of getting clicks to your site.
Good luck with your list!

Good insights. Would you tell a little more about how you find the "industry-related Keywords" that you mentioned.

Also, sometimes if you use some type of keyword tracker list, you can see recurring phrases like "causes" or something like that ocurring in phrase after phrase. That would let you know that people are interested in causes of whatever it is they are searching for, so, something like cause, causes, or something related to those words might be good keywords too.

Hi Randy,

Visit the top pages within your niche. Once you're at the home page, click on "View" (at the top of your browser toolbar) and then "Page Source". Look for the <META Name="Keywords". The keywords used by the top sites have been carefully chosen and help to get a good ranking.

Good luck

You could just use a keyword tool that does all the work for you. Google does a free one. Just type in "keywords" into Google and it should be No.1 on the list.

Hi, Griser,

Thanks. I had heard of and used some keyword tracker tools, but this was very helpful in seeing how to find out what successful people have been using.
